“I did a little research today.” Coop followed Holly across the attic to the remaining trunk. There hadn’t been a need to discuss where they were going to start. They just knew. That sense of understanding, of almost being able to read the other person’s mind, was just one of the things that had made being friends with Holly more special than any of his other friends.

More than one situation popped into his mind where all it had taken was Holly’s glance in his direction to stop him from opening mouth and inserting foot. Like the time his buddy Brock had been dating a local girl and another from the next town over. Two girls at a time was more than he wanted to deal with and it didn’t help that from behind the two girls looked alike—at least they did to Coop. He’d come within seconds of calling her the wrong name when Holly elbowed him hard. How she’d known what he was about to do, he had no idea, but Brock would have skinned him alive if he’d botched Brock’s one big effort at playing the field.

“What kind of research?” She pulled up a low needlepoint footstool and took a seat in front of another chest. A much smaller chest.

“Gathering info on the Good Samaritan. Checking out the wounded lists about the same time as G-Nan was assigned to the hospital ship.

She turned to look at him over her shoulder. “Really? Did you find anything?”

“Nothing helpful. Too many names and not enough clues.”

“Oh.” Holly leaned forward and pulled out a plain silver frame with a small snapshot in it. “You were on the right track.”

“I was?”

Holly handed off the photo. “There’s Boo with Grandma Nancy.”

“On the deck of a ship.”

“And if that wheelchair he’s in and the sling on his arm are any indication, he was a patient.”

“I wonder if there are any clues in the back.” Carefully, he took the frame apart and slipped the photo out from between the glass and backing. “Nothing.”

“She probably didn’t need reminding of who with, or where, or when the photo was taken. Too bad nobody told her that one day her descendants would be rummaging through her things wondering just that.”

“Any more photos?” he asked.

This chest had not been as full as the others they’d looked through. Unlike the earlier ones that were strictly items related to G-Nan’s military service, this one seemed to contain a hodgepodge of decorative knick-knacks, including a bible with no inscriptions, and a leather pocket-size manicure set.

“Not yet.” She shook her head.

“Why do you suppose she saved this?” He held up the manicure kit.

Holly shrugged. “It almost looks like she cleaned something out, like a dresser or something, and then just put all the items that had been in it, or on it, in this chest.”

“I suppose.” He shrugged one shoulder. “These trunks might have been used for temporary storage the way we use a plastic tote.”

“Oh, that makes sense.” She leaned back on the stool.
